What is beef tallow?

Beef tallow is a rendered fat from cattle, typically sourced from suet around the kidneys. It has been used for centuries in traditional skincare for its ability to deeply nourish and protect the skin.

Tallow is rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with essential fatty acids that help support the skin barrier. Because its composition is similar to the natural oils found in human skin, it tends to be well tolerated and easily absorbed.

How is beef tallow made?

Beef tallow is made by slowly rendering suet to separate the pure fat from any impurities. The fat is melted, strained, and cooled into a stable, shelf-friendly form.

At Prairie Wind Products, we render our own tallow using locally sourced suet. We start with a gentle wet render, followed by multiple low-heat dry renders to further purify and refine it. It’s a slow process that takes time and attention, but it’s how we keep the final product clean and consistent. We never bleached or deodorized, our tallow stays close to its natural state.

It’s honestly one of the most labour-intensive parts of what we do, but it makes a difference. This process helps preserve the natural nutrients in the tallow and creates a finished product that feels simple, effective, and easy for your skin to recognize.

What sets your tallow apart from other moisturizers?

Our products are made with a short list of purposeful ingredients. We use grass-fed, pasture-raised Alberta 🇹🇩 beef tallow and pair it with high-quality oils and slow infusions.

Our products are anhydrous (water-free). This means they’re more concentrated, and a little goes a long way.

We focus on keeping things simple, effective, and easy to understand.

What’s the difference between your Whipped Tallow Balm and Tallow Body Butter?

Both are made with grass-fed tallow, but they feel a bit different on the skin.

Our Whipped Tallow Balm is made with organic castor oil, which gives it a richer, more protective feel and was designed for facial use. It sits slightly heavier on the skin and is often preferred for the face, dry patches, or overnight use.

Our Tallow Body Butter is made with organic jojoba oil, which is lighter and absorbs more quickly. It’s a good option for full-body use or if you prefer something that feels less rich on the skin.

A lot of people use the balm for their face and the body butter for everything else, but it really comes down to personal preference.

Is beef tallow suitable for all skin types?

Tallow is generally well suited for a wide range of skin types, including dry, sensitive, and combination skin.

Because it closely resembles the skin’s natural oils, many people find it helps support hydration without disrupting the skin barrier. That said, every skin is different, so we always recommend starting with a small amount and seeing how your skin responds.

Can I use your Whipped Tallow Balm on my face?

Yes. Our Whipped Tallow Balm is commonly used on the face as a daily moisturizer or as a richer overnight treatment. We use it twice daily on our own faces!

It’s especially helpful for dry patches, sensitive areas, or during colder months when skin tends to need more support. Start with a pea-sized amount, warm it between your fingers, and apply as needed.

How long does a jar last?

It depends on how often you use it and where you’re applying it, but most people are surprised by how long a jar lasts.

Because our products are concentrated and water-free, you don’t need much per use. A jar used daily on the face can last several months, while body use will go through it a bit faster.

How much should I use?

A little goes a long way.

Start with a pea-sized amount, warm it between your fingers, and apply to the skin. You can always add more if needed, but most people find they need less than they expect.

Will beef tallow feel greasy on my skin?

Tallow is naturally rich, so it can feel a bit heavier if too much is applied.

Using a small amount is key. Start with a pea-sized amount, warm it between your fingers, and apply to slightly damp or freshly washed skin. When used this way, most people find it absorbs well and leaves their skin feeling soft rather than greasy.

Can I use this under makeup?

Yes, many people use our Whipped Tallow Balm as a base under makeup.

The key is to use a small amount and give it a few minutes to absorb before applying foundation. When applied lightly, it can leave the skin feeling smooth and hydrated without interfering with makeup.

Is beef tallow likely to clog pores?

Tallow is often described as being very compatible with the skin because its fatty acid profile is similar to our natural oils.

Many people, including those with sensitive or acne-prone skin, use it without issues. That said, everyone’s skin is different. If you’re prone to breakouts, it’s best to start with a small amount and patch test to see how your skin responds.

Can your products help with eczema, dry skin, or irritation?

Many customers with dry or sensitive skin have found relief using tallow-based products.

Tallow helps support the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss, which can be beneficial for dryness and irritation. While we can’t make medical claims, it can be a simple, supportive option for maintaining healthy skin.

Are your products safe during pregnancy?

Our products are made with simple, recognizable ingredients, but if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s always a good idea to review ingredient lists with your healthcare provider.

For those looking to keep things as simple as possible, our Natural Whipped Tallow Balm or Natural Tallow Body Butter contains no added essential oils and is often the preferred option.

Is your tallow safe for babies?

Our Natural Whipped Tallow Balm and Natural Tallow Body Butter are made with just two simple ingredients and contain no added essential oils or synthetic fragrance.

Many parents choose them for dry skin or as part of a gentle skincare routine. As with any new product, we recommend doing a small patch test first, especially on sensitive skin.

Does beef tallow have a smell?

Properly rendered tallow has a mild, natural scent that fades quickly after application.

Some people may notice it more than others depending on sensitivity. We offer both unscented and naturally scented options to suit different preferences.

Can I use tallow on my lips or around my eyes?

Yes. Our products are simple and gentle enough to be used on areas like the lips or around the eyes.

Use a very small amount and avoid getting product directly into the eyes.

How often should I apply tallow?

You can use tallow as often as needed. Most people apply it once or twice daily.

It also works well as a targeted treatment for especially dry areas like hands, elbows, or patches of irritated skin.

How should I store your products?

Store your tallow-based products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Because they are made with natural ingredients, you may notice slight changes in texture depending on temperature. This is normal and does not affect quality. If your balm becomes firm, simply warm a small amount between your fingers before applying.

For best use, we recommend using within 10 months of purchase.

Why does my balm sometimes feel grainy or have small texture changes?

Because our products are made in small batches with natural ingredients, occasional texture variation can happen.

Temperature fluctuations can cause some of the natural fats to solidify at slightly different rates, which may create a grainy texture. This is purely cosmetic and will melt smoothly when warmed between your fingers.

As noted on our label, natural variations in color or texture may occur but do not affect quality.

Is your tallow an ethical and sustainable option?

We source our suet locally in Alberta.

Tallow is a natural byproduct of the food industry, meaning it makes use of a part of the animal that might otherwise go to waste. It’s a simple, practical way to create something useful from what already exists, while keeping our production small-batch and local.
